Modern life can place enormous pressure on people. Work responsibilities, parenting, finances, relationships, health concerns, and everyday demands can quickly build up and leave people feeling emotionally overloaded.

When overwhelm becomes ongoing, it can impact nearly every area of life. Many people experience difficulty concentrating, increased anxiety, disrupted sleep, emotional exhaustion, irritability, forgetfulness, or feeling mentally “shut down.” Some people become stuck in cycles of overthinking, while others begin avoiding tasks altogether because everything feels too difficult.

Often, overwhelm develops gradually over time. People may become so focused on managing responsibilities that they stop recognising how stressed they truly are.

Counselling can help people identify the factors contributing to overwhelm while developing practical and realistic strategies to regain a sense of balance. Therapy may focus on stress management, emotional regulation, boundaries, communication skills, self-care, and learning how to prioritise personal wellbeing without guilt.

At LIFE ENHANCED THERAPIES, I aim to provide a calm and supportive space where clients can feel heard, supported, and equipped with practical tools to better manage the pressures of everyday life.

Families naturally go through periods of stress, change, and emotional pressure. Parenting responsibilities, financial concerns, relationship difficulties, blended family dynamics, behavioural challenges, caring for loved ones, and major life transitions can all place strain on family relationships.

When stress builds over time, communication often becomes more difficult. Family members may become emotionally reactive, withdrawn, frustrated, or overwhelmed. Small disagreements can escalate quickly, and people may begin feeling misunderstood, unsupported, or emotionally disconnected from one another.

Family stress does not only affect relationships within the home — it can also impact emotional wellbeing more broadly. Ongoing stress may contribute to anxiety, irritability, emotional exhaustion, low mood, sleep difficulties, poor concentration, or feelings of hopelessness.

Many people experiencing family stress feel pressure to hold everything together while struggling privately themselves. Parents, carers, and partners often focus heavily on supporting others while neglecting their own emotional wellbeing.

Common contributors to family stress may include:

Parenting challenges and behavioural concerns

Relationship conflict or communication breakdown

Separation, divorce, or co-parenting stress

Financial pressure and work demands

Mental health or addiction concerns within the family

Caring responsibilities for children or relatives

Blended family adjustments

Grief, trauma, or major life changes

Counselling provides a supportive space to slow things down and better understand the emotional patterns affecting the family system. Therapy can support healthier communication, emotional regulation, conflict resolution, problem-solving, and boundary setting within relationships.

Family counselling or individual counselling can also help people feel more supported personally while navigating difficult family dynamics. Often, gaining insight into emotional responses and communication patterns can significantly improve connection and reduce tension within the home.

At LIFE ENHANCED THERAPIES, I work with individuals and families to strengthen relationships, improve communication, and support healthier emotional patterns within the home environment.

Burnout is becoming increasingly common in modern life, particularly for people managing ongoing work pressure, caregiving responsibilities, parenting demands, financial stress, or emotionally demanding roles. Many people spend months or years operating in survival mode before recognising how emotionally and physically exhausted they have become.

Burnout is not simply about being tired after a busy week. It is a state of chronic emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion that develops over time when stress becomes ongoing and unmanageable. People experiencing burnout often feel drained, disconnected, overwhelmed, emotionally reactive, and unable to recover properly even after resting.

Some common signs of burnout include:

Constant fatigue or exhaustion

Feeling emotionally numb or detached

Irritability and low frustration tolerance

Difficulty concentrating or remembering things

Reduced motivation and productivity

Increased anxiety or emotional overwhelm

Feeling resentful, trapped, or hopeless

Sleep difficulties and physical tension

Loss of enjoyment in work or daily life

Burnout often affects people who are highly responsible, caring, or driven. Many individuals place enormous pressure on themselves to continue coping regardless of how overwhelmed they feel. Over time, they may begin neglecting their own emotional needs while prioritising everyone else.

Unfortunately, burnout can impact every area of life, including relationships, parenting, emotional wellbeing, physical health, and self-esteem. Some people begin withdrawing socially or emotionally, while others become increasingly reactive, anxious, or emotionally exhausted.

Counselling can help people better understand the underlying causes of burnout and recognise the warning signs earlier. Therapy may focus on stress management, emotional regulation, nervous system awareness, boundary setting, communication skills, self-care practices, and creating healthier routines that are sustainable long term.

An important part of recovery from burnout is learning that rest alone is often not enough. Lasting change usually involves adjusting patterns, expectations, boundaries, and coping strategies that have contributed to prolonged stress in the first place.

At LIFE ENHANCED THERAPIES, I support individuals experiencing stress and burnout by helping them better understand their emotional responses while developing practical tools to reduce overwhelm, improve balance, and support long-term wellbeing.

Burnout is becoming increasingly common in modern life. Many people are balancing work pressures, financial stress, parenting responsibilities, caregiving roles, and constant demands on their time and attention. Over time, this ongoing pressure can leave people emotionally, mentally, and physically exhausted.

Burnout is more than simply being tired. People experiencing burnout often feel emotionally drained, detached, unmotivated, irritable, and unable to switch off. Even small tasks can begin to feel overwhelming. Some people also experience increased anxiety, poor sleep, physical tension, headaches, or emotional numbness.

One of the difficulties with burnout is that many people ignore the warning signs for a long time. They continue pushing through exhaustion because they feel responsible for everyone else or believe they should be able to cope.

Counselling can help identify the underlying contributors to burnout and support people in developing healthier boundaries, improving stress management, and creating more sustainable routines. Therapy can also help people reconnect with their own needs, values, and wellbeing instead of constantly operating in survival mode.

At LIFE ENHANCED THERAPIES, I support individuals experiencing stress and burnout by helping them better understand their emotional and nervous system responses while developing practical tools to reduce overwhelm and restore balance.

Welcome to Life Enhanced Therapies

Welcome to Life Enhanced Therapies, where the focus is on supporting individuals through compassionate, professional, and personalised counselling services. We understand that life can present challenges that feel overwhelming, confusing, or emotionally draining. Our role is to provide a safe, supportive, and non-judgemental space where you can explore your thoughts and feelings openly.

At Life Enhanced Therapies, we believe that every person deserves to be heard and understood. Personal wellbeing is not a luxury—it is a foundation for a meaningful and balanced life. Through individual counselling in the Bundaberg region, we aim to help people reconnect with their inner strength, build resilience, and move toward positive change at their own pace.

Whether you are experiencing stress, anxiety, relationship difficulties, grief, life transitions, or simply feeling stuck, counselling can offer clarity and direction. Our approach is centred on empathy, respect, and genuine human connection.

Individual Counselling Bundaberg

Individual counselling in Bundaberg provides a personalised therapeutic experience designed to meet your unique needs and circumstances. No two people are the same, and therefore no two counselling journeys are identical. Sessions are tailored to support your personal goals, emotional wellbeing, and mental health needs in a way that feels comfortable and achievable for you.

One to one counselling offers the opportunity to explore your experiences in depth, without pressure or judgement. It is a space where you can speak freely, reflect honestly, and begin to understand patterns in thoughts, emotions, and behaviours that may be affecting your daily life.

Counselling can support you in developing healthier coping strategies, improving emotional regulation, and strengthening your sense of self. It can also help you navigate difficult life events, make important decisions, or gain insight into long-standing challenges.

The focus is always on you as an individual. Your story matters, your experiences matter, and your goals guide the direction of the sessions. This personalised approach ensures that counselling is not a one-size-fits-all process, but rather a meaningful and collaborative journey.

Flexible and Accessible Support Options

Life Enhanced Therapies offers flexible counselling options to ensure support is accessible to people with different lifestyles and needs. Individual counselling sessions are available face to face, over the phone, or online, allowing you to choose the format that best suits your comfort and circumstances.

Face to face sessions provide a grounded, personal connection in a safe therapeutic environment. Phone sessions offer convenience and privacy, especially for those with busy schedules or limited mobility. Online counselling provides accessibility from anywhere, making it easier for individuals outside the immediate Bundaberg region to receive support.

This flexibility ensures that counselling remains consistent and adaptable, even when life circumstances change. The goal is to make support as accessible and comfortable as possible so that you can focus on your wellbeing without unnecessary barriers.

The Benefits of Individual Counselling

Engaging in individual counselling can lead to a wide range of emotional and psychological benefits. Many people seek counselling during times of distress, but it can also be valuable for personal development and self-awareness even when life feels stable.

Counselling can help you better understand your emotions and how they influence your behaviour. It can support you in identifying unhelpful thought patterns and replacing them with more balanced and constructive perspectives. Over time, this can lead to improved emotional resilience and greater confidence in handling life’s challenges.

Another important benefit is the opportunity to feel truly heard. Having a dedicated space where you can express yourself without fear of judgement can be deeply healing. It allows you to process experiences that may have been difficult to share elsewhere.

Counselling can also assist with improving relationships, as increased self-awareness often leads to healthier communication and stronger interpersonal connections. By understanding yourself more deeply, you are better equipped to understand and relate to others.

Ultimately, individual counselling supports personal growth. It is not only about addressing difficulties but also about building a stronger sense of identity, purpose, and direction.

What to Expect in Your Sessions

Beginning counselling can feel unfamiliar, especially if it is your first time seeking support. At Life Enhanced Therapies, the process is designed to feel comfortable, respectful, and paced according to your needs.

In early sessions, the focus is often on getting to know you—your experiences, your current challenges, and what you hope to achieve through counselling. There is no pressure to share more than you are ready to. Trust and safety are developed gradually.

As sessions continue, the work may involve exploring emotions in greater depth, identifying patterns, and developing practical strategies for managing difficulties. The process is collaborative, meaning you are actively involved in shaping the direction of your counselling journey.

Confidentiality and respect are central to every session. You are supported in a space where honesty is encouraged and your experiences are treated with care and professionalism.

Michaela Rizqallah, Principal Counsellor

Michaela Rizqallah is the Principal Counsellor at Life Enhanced Therapies and plays a central role in delivering individual counselling services in the Bundaberg region. Her approach is grounded in compassion, understanding, and a strong commitment to helping clients reach their full potential.

She describes herself as compassionate, understanding, non-judgemental, realistic, and deeply invested in the wellbeing of the people she works with. These qualities form the foundation of her counselling practice and guide her interactions with every client.

Michaela has a long-standing passion for supporting individuals through their personal journeys. She believes that everyone has the capacity for growth and positive change, even during times of difficulty. Her role is to help clients recognise their strengths, build resilience, and move toward a more fulfilling life.

Her counselling style is supportive and collaborative, ensuring that clients feel empowered rather than directed. She works with individuals to help them gain insight, develop coping strategies, and create meaningful change that aligns with their values and goals.

A Safe Space for Personal Growth

At Life Enhanced Therapies, creating a safe and supportive environment is a priority. Many people seek counselling during vulnerable periods in their lives, and it is essential that they feel respected and understood throughout the process.

The counselling space is designed to be calm, welcoming, and free from judgement. Clients are encouraged to speak openly about their experiences, knowing that they will be met with empathy and care.

Personal growth often begins with small steps. By taking the time to explore your thoughts and emotions in a supportive setting, you can begin to build greater awareness and understanding of yourself. Over time, this can lead to meaningful and lasting change.

Moving Forward with Support

Individual counselling in Bundaberg offers an opportunity to invest in your personal wellbeing in a meaningful way. Whether you are seeking support during a difficult time or looking to better understand yourself, counselling can provide the space and guidance needed to move forward.

Life Enhanced Therapies is committed to walking alongside you in this process, offering professional support that is tailored, compassionate, and focused on your individual needs. Through this journey, you are supported in building resilience, developing insight, and creating a stronger sense of balance in your life.

Every person’s path is unique, and counselling provides a space to explore that path with care, respect, and understanding.

Understanding Anxiety and Stress in Everyday Life

Anxiety and stress are natural human responses to pressure, uncertainty, or perceived threat. In small amounts, they can be helpful, improving focus and helping people respond to challenges. However, when anxiety or stress becomes persistent or overwhelming, it can begin to interfere with daily functioning, relationships, sleep, and overall wellbeing.

Many people seeking support through Life Enhanced Therapies Bundaberg Counselling report that stress has gradually built up over time rather than appearing suddenly. Work demands, family responsibilities, financial pressure, health concerns, and major life changes can all contribute. Over time, the body and mind can remain in a heightened state of alert, making it difficult to relax or feel in control.

Counselling Bundaberg services are often sought when individuals notice that their usual coping strategies are no longer effective. This may include feeling constantly overwhelmed, emotionally drained, or unable to switch off mentally even during rest periods.

Common Symptoms of Anxiety and Stress

Anxiety and stress can present in both physical and psychological ways, and symptoms vary from person to person. Many individuals initially recognise physical signs before identifying emotional ones.

Common physical symptoms include muscle tension, headaches, fatigue, digestive discomfort, rapid heartbeat, and difficulty sleeping. Some people may also experience restlessness or a constant sense of being “on edge,” even when there is no immediate threat.

Emotional and cognitive symptoms can include excessive worry, racing thoughts, irritability, difficulty concentrating, and a tendency to expect worst-case scenarios. People often describe feeling mentally overloaded or unable to make decisions clearly.

Behavioural changes are also common. These may include avoiding certain situations, withdrawing from social contact, procrastination, or relying on unhelpful coping mechanisms such as overworking or emotional eating.

Through Counselling Bundaberg, individuals are supported in recognising these patterns and understanding how anxiety and stress are showing up in their daily lives.

How Anxiety and Stress Affect Daily Functioning

When anxiety and stress become ongoing, they can significantly impact quality of life. Many people find that their ability to perform at work or manage responsibilities at home becomes more difficult. Concentration may decline, productivity can drop, and tasks that once felt manageable may begin to feel overwhelming.

Relationships are also commonly affected. Increased irritability, withdrawal, or emotional sensitivity can create misunderstandings or conflict with partners, family members, and colleagues. Over time, this can lead to feelings of isolation or disconnection.

Sleep disruption is another major effect. Difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or experiencing restless sleep can worsen both stress and anxiety, creating a cycle that is difficult to break without support.

Counselling Bundaberg services provided through Life Enhanced Therapies Bundaberg Counselling help individuals understand these patterns and begin working toward restoring balance in their daily lives.

How Counselling Helps Manage Anxiety and Stress

Counselling provides a structured and supportive environment where individuals can explore the causes and triggers of their anxiety and stress. Rather than simply focusing on symptoms, therapy helps identify underlying thought patterns, emotional responses, and behavioural habits that may be contributing to ongoing distress.

One of the key benefits of counselling is increased self-awareness. Many people begin to recognise how their thinking patterns influence their emotional responses. For example, persistent worry or self-critical thoughts can intensify feelings of anxiety. By identifying these patterns, individuals can begin to challenge and reframe them in healthier ways.

Another important aspect of Counselling Bundaberg support is learning emotional regulation skills. This involves understanding how to manage intense emotions without becoming overwhelmed by them. Over time, individuals develop greater confidence in their ability to cope with stressful situations.

Counselling also provides a safe space to express thoughts and feelings that may have been suppressed or unspoken. This process alone can reduce emotional pressure and create a sense of relief.

Practical Coping Strategies Used in Therapy

A key component of anxiety and stress management in counselling is the development of practical coping strategies that can be used in everyday life. These strategies are tailored to the individual’s needs and circumstances.

Breathing techniques and grounding exercises are commonly used to help calm the nervous system during moments of heightened anxiety. These techniques help bring attention back to the present moment and reduce the intensity of physical symptoms.

Cognitive strategies are also introduced to help individuals challenge unhelpful thinking patterns. This may involve identifying distorted thoughts, questioning their accuracy, and replacing them with more balanced perspectives.

Behavioural strategies often focus on gradual exposure to avoided situations, improving routine, and increasing engagement in meaningful activities. These steps help rebuild confidence and reduce avoidance behaviours that can maintain anxiety over time.

Through Counselling Bundaberg, individuals are encouraged to practise these strategies consistently, both during and outside of sessions, to support long-term improvement.

What Happens in Counselling Sessions at Life Enhanced Therapies Bundaberg Counselling

Sessions at Life Enhanced Therapies Bundaberg Counselling are designed to be collaborative, supportive, and focused on the individual’s goals. The first sessions typically involve understanding the person’s current challenges, symptoms, and personal history related to stress and anxiety.

From there, therapy focuses on identifying patterns and developing practical strategies for managing symptoms. Each session may include discussion, reflection, and skill-building exercises depending on the individual’s needs.

The pace of counselling is guided by the client, ensuring that they feel safe and supported throughout the process. There is no expectation to rush or have everything resolved quickly. Instead, the focus is on steady progress and sustainable change.

Counselling Bundaberg services emphasise a respectful and non-judgemental approach, allowing individuals to speak openly about their experiences without fear of criticism.

When to Seek Support for Anxiety and Stress

Many people wait until anxiety or stress becomes severe before seeking help, but counselling can be beneficial at any stage. Early support often leads to better outcomes because it helps prevent symptoms from becoming more entrenched.

Signs that support may be helpful include persistent worry, ongoing fatigue, difficulty sleeping, irritability, loss of motivation, or feeling overwhelmed by daily responsibilities. Even if symptoms feel manageable, counselling can provide tools to prevent escalation.

Seeking help is not a sign of weakness. It reflects a proactive decision to improve wellbeing and regain control over daily life. Counselling Bundaberg services are designed to support individuals at all stages of their mental health journey.

Start with a Free Consultation Here

The goal of counselling is not only to reduce current symptoms but also to build long-term resilience. This means developing the ability to manage future stress more effectively and respond to challenges with greater confidence and stability.

Over time, individuals learn to recognise early signs of stress and take action before it becomes overwhelming. They also develop stronger emotional awareness, improved coping strategies, and healthier thinking patterns.

At Life Enhanced Therapies Bundaberg Counselling, the focus is on equipping individuals with practical tools that support lasting change. With continued practice, these skills become integrated into daily life, allowing individuals to navigate stress and anxiety with greater ease and resilience.

The post Made Simple for You: Counselling Helps Anxiety and Stress Management first appeared on LIFE: ENHANCED THERAPIES.

Understanding Employee Assistance Programs

Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) are structured workplace support services designed to help employees manage personal and professional challenges that may impact their wellbeing or job performance. These programs provide confidential access to counselling and practical support, enabling staff to address issues early before they escalate.

At Life Enhanced Therapies Bundaberg Counselling, EAP services are designed to support both employees and employers through evidence-based counselling and structured wellbeing programs. In the Bundaberg region, demand for Counselling services within workplace settings has grown as businesses increasingly recognise the importance of mental health support in maintaining a healthy workforce.

EAP is not limited to crisis situations. It is a preventative and supportive service that helps employees manage stress, improve resilience, and maintain emotional balance in both work and personal life.

Counselling Bundaberg: The Importance of EAP in Modern Workplaces

Workplaces today are more complex than ever, with employees balancing workload demands, personal responsibilities, and external pressures. Without adequate support, these pressures can lead to stress, burnout, conflict, and reduced productivity.

Employee Assistance Programs delivered by Life Enhanced Therapies Bundaberg Counselling provide a structured way for organisations to support their staff through these challenges. Access to Counselling Bundaberg services ensures that employees have a safe and confidential space to discuss issues that may be affecting their wellbeing.

When employees feel supported, they are more likely to remain engaged, motivated, and committed to their workplace. This creates a healthier organisational culture and reduces turnover, absenteeism, and workplace tension.

Tailored Employee Assistance Programs for Bundaberg Organisations

Every workplace is different, and effective EAP delivery must reflect the unique needs of each organisation. Life Enhanced Therapies Bundaberg Counselling provides tailored Employee Assistance Programs designed to suit businesses of all sizes and industries in the Bundaberg region.

These programs can include one-on-one counselling sessions, workplace wellbeing workshops, manager support training, and conflict resolution strategies. The flexibility of the service ensures that employers receive support that is relevant and practical.

For some organisations, the focus may be on stress management and burnout prevention. For others, the priority may be improving communication, supporting leadership teams, or addressing workplace conflict. Tailored Counselling Bundaberg services ensure that each of these needs is met effectively.

Common Issues Addressed Through EAP

Employee Assistance Programs cover a wide range of personal and workplace-related concerns. One of the most common issues is workplace stress, often caused by high workloads, time pressures, or organisational change.

Mental health concerns such as anxiety and depression are also frequently supported through EAP services. Providing early access to counselling can significantly improve outcomes for employees experiencing these challenges.

Workplace conflict is another key area where EAP plays an important role. Miscommunication, personality clashes, and unresolved disagreements can affect team dynamics and productivity. Counselling Bundaberg sessions help individuals develop healthier communication strategies and conflict resolution skills.

Personal issues such as relationship difficulties, financial stress, grief, and major life transitions can also impact work performance. EAP provides employees with a confidential space to work through these challenges with professional support.

Benefits for Employees

Employees who access EAP services through Life Enhanced Therapies Bundaberg Counselling gain access to professional support in a confidential and non-judgemental environment. One of the most significant benefits is improved mental and emotional wellbeing.

Counselling Bundaberg services help employees develop practical coping strategies for managing stress, improving communication, and regulating emotions. These skills not only improve workplace performance but also enhance personal life.

Another key benefit is early intervention. Employees can address issues before they become more serious, reducing the risk of long-term stress, burnout, or mental health decline.

EAP services also help employees feel valued and supported by their employer, which contributes to higher job satisfaction and stronger workplace engagement.

Benefits for Employers

Employers also benefit significantly from implementing Employee Assistance Programs. One of the most immediate advantages is reduced absenteeism, as employees are better able to manage personal and work-related challenges.

Improved productivity is another key outcome. When employees are mentally and emotionally supported, they are more focused, efficient, and effective in their roles.

EAP services also contribute to a positive workplace culture. Offering Counselling Bundaberg support through Life Enhanced Therapies Bundaberg Counselling demonstrates a commitment to staff wellbeing and fosters trust within the organisation.

Additionally, EAP can assist in reducing workplace conflict and improving team dynamics, leading to a more stable and collaborative working environment.

Confidentiality and Professional Care

Confidentiality is a core principle of all Employee Assistance Programs. Employees must feel confident that their participation in counselling will remain private and will not negatively impact their employment.

Life Enhanced Therapies Bundaberg Counselling maintains strict confidentiality and professional ethical standards in all EAP services. This ensures that employees can speak openly and honestly without fear of judgement or exposure.

Professional counselling standards also ensure that employees receive high-quality, evidence-based support tailored to their individual needs.

Training and Preventative Workplace Support

In addition to individual counselling, EAP services can include preventative training and workplace education. These programs are designed to build resilience and improve overall workplace wellbeing.

Workshops may focus on stress management, communication skills, emotional regulation, leadership support, and conflict resolution. These sessions provide practical tools that employees and managers can apply immediately in the workplace.

Preventative support is a key part of effective EAP delivery, as it helps reduce the likelihood of issues escalating into more serious problems.

Implementing an EAP in Bundaberg Workplaces

Implementing an Employee Assistance Program begins with understanding the specific needs of the organisation. This includes identifying workplace challenges, employee wellbeing goals, and areas where support is most needed.

Life Enhanced Therapies Bundaberg Counselling works closely with employers to design and deliver tailored EAP solutions. This collaborative approach ensures that the program is relevant, accessible, and effective.

Clear communication is also essential. Employees need to understand what support is available, how to access it, and the confidentiality protections in place.

Building a Healthier Workplace Culture

Employee Assistance Programs are not just about responding to problems. They are about building a stronger, healthier workplace culture where employees feel supported and valued.

Through Counselling Bundaberg services provided by Life Enhanced Therapies Bundaberg Counselling, organisations can foster resilience, improve communication, and enhance overall wellbeing.

By investing in EAP, businesses in Bundaberg create an environment where employees are better equipped to manage challenges and perform at their best. This leads to long-term benefits for both individuals and organisations, including stronger relationships, improved morale, and sustained productivity.

The post Powerful Employee Assistance Programs Delivered in the Bundaberg Area first appeared on LIFE: ENHANCED THERAPIES.

Feeling anxious is a painfully common experience that we all go through from time to time. Maybe we’re getting ready to speak to a big group or walking on a shady street at night. In these cases, anxiety can be a good thing, priming us for danger and making us ready to act. For some people however, they feel knotted stomachs, fast heart rates and heavy breathing for all the wrong reasons. Anxiety disorders are as varied as they are common and affect many of the people around us. In this article we’ll explore what disordered anxiety is, why we experience it, and how we can better manage it.

What is an Anxiety Disorder?

People with anxiety disorders often experience overwhelming worry, fear, or nervousness – feelings that can feel far bigger than what’s actually happening. This often comes with physical symptoms like a racing heart or tense muscles. When these symptoms become constant and make it hard to manage everyday life, it might be an anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders come in a spectrum, and individuals may experience one or multiple types of anxiety in various levels of intensity.

Some common types of anxiety disorders include:

Generalised anxiety: Characterised by constant fear, worries, and unrealistic concerns, Generalised anxiety affects people by making them concerned and overwhelmed by everyday activities that would otherwise feel normal and safe.

Panic disorder: Panic disorder is the main cause of panic attacks. People with panic disorder experience unexpected and intense moments of severe panic and stress, often causing severe physical symptoms. Panic attacks can be both random and triggered by stress or external stimulus.

Agoraphobia: Similar to Generalised anxiety, Agoraphobia is more specifically anxiety triggered by unfamiliar situations and an intense fear of getting overwhelmed by new things. People living with Agoraphobia will often avoid new experiences and unfamiliar environments out of this fear.

Social anxiety: Social anxiety is the fear and stress some people feel around themselves and others in social situations. One common example is a constant fear of judgement.

PTSD related anxiety: Post traumatic stress disorder carries with it numerous characteristics of an anxiety disorder and has many similar symptoms and triggers. PTSD related anxiety is the result of one or many traumatic events that caused the wider disorder.

Anxiety disorders can affect anyone at anytime for a number of reasons. Some of the main causes of anxiety disorders include:

Neurological chemical imbalances

Changes in the amygdala

Genetic/hereditary predisposition

Environmental factors (such as a high stress job)

Traumatic events

Common symptoms:

Common symptoms of anxiety include:

Panic responses

Fear

Obsessive thoughts

Loss of concentration

Extreme pessimism

Restlessness

Insomnia

High heart rate

Sweating and clamminess

Muscle tension

Headache

Nausea

And more. These are common traits of anxiety and its important to note that many individuals will have unique reactions dependant on many factors about the specifics of them and their disorder.

How is it managed?

For more severe symptoms, medication and therapy may be needed for effective treatment. That said, there are some steps you can take to manage anxiety on your own. Some steps to take include:

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle: Eat well, exercise, and reduce stress where you can.

Use relaxation techniques: meditation, journaling, breathing techniques, etc

Identify and mange your triggers: if you find yourself affected by certain stimuli, taking measures to limit their impact can help.

Learn about your disorder: credible research and professional consultations can provide you with useful tools and information to help you manage your anxiety.

Unique personal strategies: many people with anxiety disorders come up with unique methods and practices that help them manage. This could be anything from a particular song that calms you, to a specific place to visit or a friend to call. The important part is finding something that works for you.

Anxiety disorders are very common and can be very difficult to live with. Thankfully there are things you can do to make it easier; educate yourself, manage what you can, and seek help if you need it, and it will get better.

Who couldn’t use some more relaxing?

Stressed out? Tired? Tenses muscles? No time to take a break? Always hustling? And all the time you’re thinking: “I need to R E L A X”. But ain’t no-one got time for that around here, no-no, uh-uh. Between work, family, household chores, meetings, traveling to and from places and the daily grind of life we feel the stress building and relaxing looking like a distant dream.

There are ways to add some down time or relaxation into your day to day. Most of it has to do with #mindset. When we learn to drop the drama we are actively seeking to not engage with issues that may create unnecessary stress to our lives. Choosing not to watch the news, get off social media, step out of that stupid argument that so-and-so is always banging on about is a good start. Because let’s face it; the drama is still going to be there whether or not we choose to get involved. The news will continue to play out even if we don’t watch it. The social media beast will continue to thrive without our presence for a few hours (or even a few days). You would be amazed at how different life feels without scrolling through social media all the time.

When we learn to drop the drama we are actively seeking to not engage with issues that may create unnecessary stress to our lives.

Breathing; yup, I know, that’s what everyone says to do. Do you know why they all tell you to breathe? Because it works, it really does work. Taking an extra 5 mins at the end of your gym session or run, when you first wake up or last thing at night can be just the ticket to restore your balance. Using breathing intermittently throughout your day will also go a long way to drawing you shoulders down away from your ears. Also great in case of emergency, like when when you’re ready to throttle that college that won’t stop ragging on you, or shouting at your kid because they won’t stop asking for (insert relevant child preference here) and all you want is for them to go to bed or going mental at your spouse because they didn’t listen the first seven times to told them to leave you alone. Yup, breathing is great.

Pay your bills on time. Or even better have them direct debit or bill pay out a set amount so that you don’t get bill shock when the letters roll in. And… don’t spend what you don’t have. That way you don’t own anyone anything ($$ that is).

Get a physical and make sure that your health is in check.

Do all the things that make you say “ahhhhh” once in a while. The self-care list is endless and I won’t bore you. If it relaxes you and you enjoy it then treat yourself once in a while.

Get some green in ya! That is in every way possible. Eat your greens. See your greens. The colour green is said to have beneficial effects on your sense of wellbeing, improve sleep and is therapeutic mental health.

Ever thought of seeing a counsellor but hate the idea of being stuck in a room talking to someone who you’ve never met, or hardly know?

Walk and Talk therapy might just be for you. The very act of moving forward or sitting in nature can help relax and ease us into the rhythm of talking. Being outdoors also takes the pressure off feeling like we have to perform or have expectations placed on us.

Taking time to be outside, taking a gentle stroll and chatting to someone about what it is that worries you can in and of itself be therapeutic.

As a Counsellor I offer this service to clients on request. We walk and as you share I offer insight and ‘pearls of wisdom’ (as I call them) to help you find your way through your challenges.

So if you’re thinking about counselling, why not give this a try? Exercise and therapy, sounds like a winner to me.
